NOSE: super intense bouquet of dried apricot and botrytis; hints of rubber and underbrush. very nice.
BODY: rich golden yellow color; medium-full bodied.
TASTE: intense flavors of dried apricots and agave nectar; great balance; full palate; 8.5% alc.; easily a 30 year wine. stunning! marvelous! [fill-in your own superlatives]. Wow!
I just had the 1996 JJ Christoffel, same designation but it was the Spatlese. Definite yum, need to get me some of these in the cellar. Have to watch for this 2006, thanks Brian
I’ve always liked the J.J. Christoffel wines, but have to admit I’ve never thought of them quite in the front rank of Mosel’s.
Have they upped their game just recently?
The last vintage I’ve tasted is '03.
My experience with Christoffel is not extensive, but I’ve yet to have anything less than excellent from their stable. I’d say they’re worth another look. This one was ridiculous-good!
Hey Brian - I’ll keep an eye out for some of their last few vintages.
I certainly didn’t mean I haven’t liked their wines quite a bit. They were almost always good buys/QPR as well.
I just meant I wouldn’t put them in the same group with the top group (in my mind & experience, anyway) of guys like Fritz Haag, JJ Prum, Dr Pauly-Bergweiler, Dr Loosen, Egon Muller (not that I can afford them anymore!?!), Karlsmuhle, Karthauserhof, Maximin Grunhauser, & Van Volxem.
