TN: 2006 Holdredge Pinot Noir Wren Hop Vineyard

  • 2006 Holdredge Pinot Noir Wren Hop - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (9/14/2009)
Nice transparent red color and surprisingly, a bit more sediment then I would have expected. Strong, spicy nose of crushed ripe cherry, some slight cola notes and a bit of pine cone thrown in as well. Very characteristic of the Russian River Valley. On the palate, this was initially very tight but it only needed about 30 mins in the decanter to shake it loose and after that it was pretty tasty and smooth with a firm grip on the finish. I’ll explain my question later, but was this wine consumed outdoors?

I like John’s wines, but have only had the 2007 lineup. I like the Wren Hop, but the Mazie Rose is the star of the bunch, to me. Just a bit of sweetness - in a good way - adds to its elegance.

Outside? No, opened and tossed in the decanter for dinner.

The note of “pine cone” resonated with me because I have noticed lately that whenever I take a glass of wine outside, it takes on a “piney” odor that detracts from its bouquet and palate. I have not been able to figure it out.

Do you live in a forest? [basic-smile.gif]

I often get a pine smell from Sonoma Coast wines or at least that is how I describe it. Not normally in wines RRV specific though. But its never something needs to be rinsed from my glass anymore than a pepper or lemon aroma.

Yes - a forest of grapevines! neener

i find Alpine Forest in a lot of Sonoma PN, quite different from forest floor too.
