TN: 2006 Four Vines - "Anarchy" - (Paso Robles, CA)

  • 2006 Four Vines Anarchy - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (9/22/2009)
    – popped and poured –
    – tasted non-blind over 2 days –
    – 36% Mourvedre, 32% Syrah, 32% Zinfandel –

NOSE: very tight upon opening, with hints of fresh crayola crayons; slowly opens to reveal rich purple-red fruits ( black cherry and loganberry) and oak/maple.

BODY: lots of particulate matter; violet color of medium-deep depth; medium bodied.

TASTE: sweet, and very alcoholic tasting – vodka-like; was surprised to see only 15.0% abv. labeled; not funky, a bit earthy, but mostly just very ripe fruit; flower petals on finish; not nearly as good as the ‘05 vintage of this same bottling; candied; tannic; a bit sour; approx. 40 sec. finish; this wine is kind of all over the place. I’m kind of surprised my score is as high as it is.

B: 50, 5, 11, 13, 6 = (85 pts.)

I have had this wine only a couple of times and found the same as you in that it is “kind of all over the place.”

I always hear people talking up this wine, but I have never “got it.” Always thought it was just me.

Well, to be fair, I am the highest CT score for the ‘05 vintage of this wine, so you might have heard me talking this wine up, if you’ve heard conversation about the “Anarchy” in general. I was able to score some of the ‘05 for less than $30 a bottle, making it a fantastic QPR to my palate. This ‘06, however, I paid $40 for, and I just can’t get past the Skyy-like alcohol taste on the palate, making this a big-time disappointment for me. Oh well … still have a sole ‘05 left.
