TN: 2006 Filliatreau Saumur-Champigny La Grande Vignolle

  • 2006 Filliatreau Saumur-Champigny La Grande Vignolle - France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny (7/2/2009)
nose: absolutely lovely nose filled with red cherries, red berries, all sorts of various purple florals, bits of bell peppe, peppercorns and some tones of olives. A very pretty nose that can really only come from a loire cab franc

taste: very smooth medium feel with nice medium acidity and some good tannins. Well balanced with tones of raspberries, red cherries, purple florals, bits of meaty tones and some olives

overall: a real lovely wine that can come from nowhere else. Plush and soft aromatics with a great feel on the palate. This was great both on its own and with some pizza, this is just delicious and so well balanced (90 pts.)

Nice, two Saumur posts in one day!

I need to give Loire a try. I remember first getting into Rhones, and now they are among my go-to wines, particularly with food. Thanks for the notes.

Do you have a price point on this one Keith? Saumur-Champigny is my favorite red region in the Loire. Haven’t tried many 06’s at all though.

Great estate. Authentic, honest wines. You should try the VV if you can. The '05 was incredible.

Probably 18ish.

cris- this was at 18.99 which made me even more happy. At the begining of the year I vowed to myself to branch out and check out more Loire reds, and now I really want to check out more stuff

lyle- where are some good stores that would have teh VV that will ship to IL? I’d love to have both side by side

I had this last week (This is the unfiltered version, I know in '05 they made both, unsure if both imported to US)

Nice midweight Cab Franc, pure juicy black cherry fruit, some earth, coffee, and just a hint of herbs, but
nothing green or vegetal. A bit less tannic than the '05, but certainly no lack of structure. Nice
length, very good wine that I wish I had bought more of. B++

The VV is hard to get. My former employer, CSW, had the 2005 exclusive I know. I am not sure if there was a 2006.

I would put in a wine-searcher alert or e-mail the importer, Joe Dressner.

Thanks for reminding me of this wine. I bought some of the '05 and have been waiting on it – drank one in summer '07 and it was very tannic, but I really enjoyed the slightly sour dark cherry fruit and Bordeaux-like structure. I’ll have to try another soon.
