No formal notes taken but a few notes from memory from tasting this bottle over 2 nights. Rich black fruits balanced with a distinct mineral edge. When it first hits the palate, it feels like its going to be a dense wine, but the acidity on the back end gives it a nice lift that keeps it refreshing. On day 2, more of the same with the added bonus of a blast of black pepper that keeps things interesting. Delicious!
Hmmm I’ve seen this at Canals for $40. Guess I should pick up a couple. The review from WA seemed to say this was not Well’s best effort but…
I ran out of this a few months ago and was bummed. Forget what the WA says, this was a terrific bottle. Maybe it was a bit too elegant and balanced for Uncle Bob. In any event, I have it on good authority that the 2007 HC and Hawke’s Butte Syrah, plus the Kaiser en Haut Pinot (another wine that The Palate did not praise), are going to be in the release in August. I plan to defy His Eminence and order some of all three.
The Fall release is coming out July 31 and will include the HC, Hawks Butte, James Berry Les Copain, and the Kiser en Haut. Really looking forward to this release…
Good to see you posting here Paul. This is a very nice wine that I think needs a couple more years. I’ve found it to be one of the bigger fruited wines in Wells live up.

Paul,
Looking forward to the upcoming release as well, but I’ll probably have to choose two of the four to keep my debit card from melting down. Purchased the 07 James Berry and Thompsons offer about a month ago and still agonizing over the current offer for 2005 1/2’s, and 2006 Mags. Love to buy some mags, but the premium is a bit stiff. Will probably buy one or two just to have the format.
Speaking of 06 HC, The Chicago Wine Company (tcwc.com) is showing the 06 HC and 06 Thompson at $28.50 per bottle at the moment, which is amazing. Just purchased four (2 each) and am expecting confirmation tomorrow. The price has been showing for a couple of weeks now, so am guessing it is not a mistake.
Cheers,
Steve
Wells was rocking in 2006, and his 2007s are even better … really amazing how he’s recalibrated his style and can still crank out phenomenal wine. I admire what he’s doing a lot. The wines give enormous pleasure. Complexity and purity.
