I started in on this after finishing the 2007 Copain Wentzel PN I opened last night (see my note). The bottle was open for a few hours before I got to it. Needless to say, this was a very different wine.
At first I thought this was dominated by oak and really messed up (Mr. Big Jay would probably say I opened it about 20 years too early). After some air, the oak settles down and an interesting wine emerged. Dark purple in the glass, there is a lot of charcoal, black fruit and wood in the flavor profile. I believe there is a good deal of Merlot in this blend. The wine is very big – bigger than I like most days – but it is nicely balanced and enjoyable for the right situation (cold weather, big slab of beef?). While the nose is reticent at the moment, I think this wine is an infant and the aromatics will blossom with some years in the cellar. Interesting drink.
