TN: 2006 Cliff Lede Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District

  • 2006 Cliff Lede Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District - USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District (6/5/2010)
Pop and pour with no decant. Deep violet red color with cassis, mocha and coffee notes on the nose. Fairly ripe fruits throughout with dark currants dominating framed by multi-layered tannins that eventually give your lips and teeth a nice purple hue. There’s a nice overall smoothness to this wine and the moderate alcohol (15.2%) is fairly well concealed but does poke through just a touch on the finish. At full retail ($55) I wouldn’t purchase this again but fortunately it was on sale for $35, which is a nice price for a well built Napa Cab. (90 pts.)

I don’t consider 15.2% moderate. 35 dolllars and I am a buyer.

$35 at KL wines (wine club member pricing)

Here’s my alcohol rating scale for CA Cab:

< 14.2% = light
14.3% - 15.4% = moderate

15.4% = heavy
16% = stupid

What is the qualitative scoring for SQN or Turley?

That’s just my grading scale. If a winemaker can make a ‘stupid’ wine and mask the alcohol so that it feels like a ‘moderate’ wine, then they get bonus points.
