TN: 2006 Château Malescot St. Exupery

  • 2006 Château Malescot St. Exupery - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux (1/19/2010)
Wow! What a nose on this wine! Jumps out of the bottle with a ton of Bordeaux funk like stinky flowers with some pencil lead and earth. That may not sound appealing but it’s actually quite nice. Rotate 180 degrees to the palate and experience what can only be described as a slightly lighter version of a big Napa Cabernet blend. Dark fruits at midpalate with smooth, rich tannins giving a slight chocolate note to the finish. Loved it. I have no doubt that this will age very nicely but it is quite tasty as an infant and makes me want to jump into a few more 06s. (92 pts.)

Many thanks for the note, Rob.

I jumped at a few 375s of this on ‘sale.’ will be curious to see how pricing for Malescot holds up. On one hand, they’ve come out of nowhere since 2003 and generally keep a low profile, on the other, they’ve gotten great press, and seem to have benefitted more than almost any other chateau by the success/hype of their 05.

I think I have a bottle of the '83 kicking around somewhere…will be curious to see if there’s anything left in that guy

I think the winery went through new ownership around 97/98, so the style has really changed. The wines prior are decent, and given the quality of the appellation for 83, the wine should be quite nice, but do drink up.

I recently had a bottle of the 83 and it was a pleasant Margaux but clearly on the downslope. I have a few more that I have to find to finish. Malescot made terrific wines in 95 and 96. They were large voluptuous wines that had many years left when I drank them recently.
The change in ownership has improved the quality of the wines released in all years including classic as well as celestial vintages and I look forward to my 03 and 05’s that I own in multiple sizes.

Thanks guys –

the '83 is high on my list of wines I need to drink by year’s end. Also up there are 82 Saint Pierre (mag), 75 Brane Cantenac, and 70 pape clement. will be curious to see how they do.

if anyone is in London or New York – i’m happy to share

woo woo

Had the 2003 very recently, kind of left me [scratch.gif]

I’m just not fond of the vintage. 2005 on the other hand, bought me a case

Need a 3L of 08 for my son too!
