2006 Château Jean-Faure St. Émilion Grand Cru- France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (1/24/2010)
The surprise of the night. A nose of all flowers and fruit, this shot from the glass and the non-wine drinkers at the table became curious for a sniff. This was seductive and fragrant. Deep darkish red and black fruts of cherries, plums and currants. There is as seemless medium weighted mouthfeel and a texture that really catches my attention. Plush and elegant. An admirable long finish. The fruit never ends. The first Bord-oh I have enjoyed since…I can’t recall. (90 pts.)
I dig this Chateau, first discovered it with the 2005 vintage, and I did notice something distinctive about it as well - though I think what I latched onto on both the nose and the palate is the unusually high percentage of cab franc in it (I’m a big cab franc whore). On that basis, I adopted it as my poor man’s substitute for Cheval Blanc (not because of actual similarity, I wouldn’t know what Cheval Blanc tastes like!). Can’t wait for the 05s to be ready enough that I’m not afraid it’ll be closed when I pop it.
But what I really want to know is- Mike, how did this fall into your glass?!? Did you misread “Chateau Jean Faure St. Emilion” as “Chateau St. Jean” and think “Cinq Cepages!”?
I had some good friends over for dinner last night and my buddy of 35 years wanted to bring something to impress me. He went to Moore Bros and told the guy my story, you know, my anti-francopile thing, he was assured this was a wine any cali lover would love. One sniff and I knew we had a winner. I told John it was a ballsy move for a non-geek to bring wine to my home, he just smiled and said, “You’re welcome”.
We clanged glasses and returned to the regularly scheduled communal wife bashing…
