2006 Bruno Giacosa Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggiore- Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Nebbiolo d’Alba (2/13/2010)
Light ruby-garnet color. Sweet bright fruit with a small dose of tannin. A lovely little wine, but surprisingly expansive and complex. Tar, roses, and black fruit. Light, but still Giacosa. An amazing value at $18. Should soften and come together in a year or so, then drink well for maybe 10 more! (90 pts.)
At this price, it’s worth popping one just to see it as it evolves.
A long long time ago, when I was first getting into wine, a local store had a very modest, but well made Bordeaux for under $3. I ended up going through 3 cases of it over the course of 5 or 6 years. That really gave me a feel for how wine evolves over time. This is a rare opportunity to do that with a modest Giacosa.
Sitting in a decanter for a week, I can’t believe the condition of this wine! Still in terrific shape. Holds up well with a rib eye. Really nice stuff.
