TN: 2006 Antoniolo Gattinara Osso San Grato

  • 2006 Antoniolo Gattinara Osso San Grato - Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Gattinara (12/22/2013)
Visual: Dark burgundy color. No clouding or bricking at all. Dark, but transparent. Looks like a young burgundy. No thickness to the wine.

Nose: Tart cherries, spice, wood. Not a terribly giving nose, but it improved after a day or so.

Palate: Very restrained the first few hours, then “Wow”. Tart dried cherry, black pepper and juicy game meat. Bright acids add to the flavor. Well out together.

This can definitely age longer, but us quite tasty once it opens up. B/B+.

This is not sounding like a ringing endorsement, particularly at the prices these go for nowadays ($50-60).
Have you had Antoniolo’s wines before? Because I would tend to put them a grade higher.

Markus, I tend to be a pretty tough grader. B would be what most would call a low 90 point wine. To me a 90 is truly exceptional.

Thanks for your note. I have a few in the cellar.
