TN: 2005 Zilliken (Forstmeister Geltz) Saarburger Rausch Riesling Spätlese

  • 2005 Zilliken (Forstmeister Geltz) Saarburger Rausch Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (10/7/2011)
Opened and served within an hour, this wine has a light to medium yellow color, it shows nice notes of apple and pear. It has viscosity with a fairly long finish with enough citrus acidity to pair with food. There are more notes on the finish. Could it be lychee or almond?

Wow, it was a wine that exceeded expectations especially after reading the mixed notes here on CT. This wine was served with spicy Thai food, so it was not examined beyond how well it served the meal. If this is in a dumb stage, it will be brilliant down the road. Glad I have another bottle!

Great notes! I had some Zilliken rieslings recently, and they were delicious. and the 2005 spatleses taste so good right now. i’ve had simliar experiences with 2005 mosel rieslings, and i really enjoy them. i specificaly remember tasting some almond, marzipan and peanut shell flavors in some 2005s. it’s really unique, and seems distinct to this vintage. so i bought up some 2005s when i was in the mosel last week, and i’m excited to see what they do. cheers!

Nancy,

try to find some 2009 “Rausch” Kabinett. Such cheap and such delicious.

Take care,
Martin

Will do, Martin. I need to stock up on Riesling and will search for the 2009 Rausch.

Interesting note, Isaac. Peanut shell! My stash of 2005 German’s is limited but I will try to distinguish that flavor next time. We will be in your area for a couple days this month, BTW.

will be drinking the 2005 Auslese tomorrow afternoon with two well known winemakers in South Africa. will post a note

Love Zilliken’s wines. Thanks for the notes.
