I’ve been wanting to check in on some 04 and 05 white burgs so with fish and spring veggies on the menu tonight this bottle was found within easy reach:
-
2005 Vincent Girardin Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes-Dessus - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru (6/10/2009)
Initially a touch of toast on the nose that otherwise shows waxy white flowers, stones, fat ripe fruit and a rather more mineral and savory than sweet and fruity overall character. Quite attractive on the nose but currently presents a bit flatter/thinner on the palate than the nose promises. Definitely well balanced, saline and mineral tang and waxy flowers on the finish, but perhaps lacking a bit in concentration. A couple of years in bottle should help, here’s hoping 05s hold up until 2011 or so!

Overall I think that Girardin wines are good wines for the money. Perhaps Bouchard and Boillot make better wines but they are also a bit pricier. In any case this was very enjoyable, if not particularly thrilling or complex.
