TN: 2005 Villa Creek High Road James Berry Vineyard (USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles)

As we continue the winter of Villa Creek, I opened this 40% Grenache, 40% Syrah and 20% Mourvedre. James Berry Vineyard. 15.5%. Screw top Stelvin. Perfect cap. Good ruby-red color. Sweet kirsch and cherry nose, with some smoky notes, flowers and spice. No hard edges and intergrating very nicely. Mouthwatering red and purple fruits with some floral/spice on the finish. Has good acidity, but i think the tannins are starting to fade, so I would drink in the short term (within 2-3 years). In a great spot now and don’t see much room for “improvement”. (92 pts.)

Villa Creek is getting a lot of notice with tasting notes lately. Seems like I need to give these wines another go.

Would you get back in with one of these or another of their releases?

Hey Tim,

I would jump back in with a couple of VC’s less expensive offerings: Avenger or Willow Creek Cuvee… if you like Tempranillo, the Mas de Maha is a good drinker. I also like the Garnacha, but it needs a little time to intergrate.

If you like these, then I would recommend dipping you toe in some of their higher end stuff…

The 06’s are drinking well right now, and 07’s should be readily available (decant for at least 30 minutes)

And if you are in Fresno (or Carmel), there are probably some nice Beserkers who would open a couple bottles to try grouphug
