2005 Turley Zinfandel Rattlesnake Ridge - USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain (12/26/2009)
A fiercely underrated bottling. Raspberry is the name of the game here. Remember when you were young and went for walks in the outdoors, picking fresh raspberries off the bushes and popping them in your mouth, surrounded by the smells of pine needle and brush? No? Well, I do, and that’s what this wine brings to mind. The structure here is incredible, with a thick and almost creamy mouthfeel that is blow-for-blow a match for its intense rustic fruit and strong acidity.
Turley is a funny producer. I am completely unimpressed by their lower-end product. However, if you want to spend $50 and up, they make the best Zins in the world, bar none. This juice is world-class. I am curious how it will age… if I’m told it will, I may actually go ahead and lay down some bottles for a serious period of time.
BTW the finish on this guy goes on for freakin’ MINUTES. Longest finish on a wine I’ve ever experienced…(94 pts.)
