TN: 2005 TOR Kenward Family Wines Chardonnay Cuvée Torchiana

  • 2005 TOR Kenward Family Wines Chardonnay Cuvée Torchiana - USA, California, Napa Valley (12/6/2014)
From magnum. After about 15 minutes, the air blew off the initial acid, revealing a fantastic, deep Chardonnay. Great flavors of apple, minerals, and flowers. Drinking very well now but will last for many years. Recommend decanting at this point. (93 pts.)

What was the oak signature like at this point in its evolution?

I didn’t take detailed formal notes, so going a bit on memory from Saturday evening. The oak is definitely there, meaning there’s no confusing this with a white burgundy. But it’s very integrated and balanced, not like the think mouth fell, buttery texture that you get on lower end Cali Chards. What struck me on the pop-and-pour was that I immediately thought premox, with high acid and mushroomy flavor and nose, but this cleared up after a few minutes in the glass. That’s my reason for recommending decanting at this point. Hope that helps.
