I’ve always found Syzgys entry level $20 Red to be a fun wine, and I don’t mean that in a negative or condescending tone, but a genuinely playful, well made field blend that stands out from the norm (compared to most other Walla Walla reds at this price point). Thus I was genuinely curious to see how $44 would go on a Tempranillo / Malbec blend. In short, money well spent. Initially, heavy aromas of new oak dominated the decanter (decanted 90 minutes), but this was short lived, as a meaty, herbal laced black fruit scents began to harmonize with the oak; the vanilla tones morphed into a really interesting sassafras quality. A dark and high ph wine, but the ripe boysenberry fruit is brilliantly buffered by a savory earth and road tar qualities. Little oak on the palate and the tannins are pretty much buried under the weight of the raw material above, but they are definitely there. Deceptively and sneaky acidity which keeps the wine fresh and humming along on a beautiful Friday evening. I must of had the same sample as JSM  I see this as ready now, and good to over the next five years. A producer to watch. (92 pts.)

Dale,
Thanks for the note. Sounds like it performed just as we thought it would. Love the playfullness of a tempranillo/malbec blend. Would love to see Syzygy try another. Their 06 cab was tasty!
