2005 Switchback Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Peterson Family Vineyard- USA, California, Napa Valley (7/25/2014)
What an amazing expression of Napa Cab this truly is.
Nose of ripened black berries, dark currant and sweet dark cherries. Hint of cola don’t hurt. Palate is expansive with some dustiness of fruits; black cassis driven and black fruit ride with some sassafras, cardamom and wild spring flowers. Elegant and forceful this remains true throughout. Balance is spot on with tannins resolved and somewhat chewy still, but make no mistake, this is not bad tonight. I had this along a grilled pork chop and it really flew high. I still think it interesting to view these mid 2000 Foley era wines alongside one another and how he treated some like science projects and some like Napa Cabs. This is surely the later as his use of oak is deft. Long and true, this remains. What an amazing bottle of wine. (94 pts.)
Pop, decant, drink. Striding at about 30 minutes.
I had just seen what I paid for this bad boy. ($125)
Probably high but I may regret saying, worth it.
Great wine.
I needed this to be great. I recently have been thinking of selling all my pre 2008 wines for lack of joy, or something like that. The new wave of cabs have enthralled me so that it did not make sense not to concentrate on them. How wrong I was. I will chalk it up to a momentary brain-fart. I seem to do that more these days. Guess it comes with the territory. This wine last night brought home all I love in a Napa Cabernet. Glad I still have my cellar mostly intact. Thanks for listening.
I’m glad you posted this, Mike. We have a mag of this and I’ve been wondering how it is progressing.
Interestingly, I realize now that it was a very thoughtful gift for my wife about seven years ago from several of our very own berserkers when she earned her PhD. Isn’t that right, Bud and Joe D.?
Thanks for the note, Mike. Love this wine. We last had it a few years ago, and it was the preferred by six different wine drinkers over the 2004 Beringer PR Cab, which was also quite good. I have a few left and appreciate the data point.
