I find that certain tannic grapes or wines with longer maceration can come off as “hot”, as in alcoholic, when it’s the tannins themselves playing tricks on you. Mission, which is a pretty tannic grape, has a tendency to go that way if you’re not careful. I think Petite Syrah has a tendency for that, too. And perhaps a few of the Italian varieties.
