2005 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Botella- USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Rita Hills - Sta. Rita Hills (6/12/2009)
Another fantastic bottle from them. I love these wines for exactly what they are, a full throttle stroll down the path of hedonism. You have to love the nose, lots of wet dark earth with smoky, peppery notes. Flavors of wild berry, plum, raspberry liqueur are penetrating and delicious. From time to time a little red cherry peaks out. Texture has some weight, but seems to glide. This does finish with some spice and a touch of heat, but the fruit makes a comeback and dampens the potential alcohol detractor. Exactly what I was in the mood for tonight. Should probably add a point for that fact. (92 pts.)
sadly i only get offered one bottle of Botella each year and tend to have it on/around my B-Day in May. i had the 05 last month and adored the wine though i felt the nose was purely dominated by tea. i do like how you used “glide” to describe the texture. found that very apt based upon the vintages i have tried.
i’ll get to an 04 Southing later this summer for sure.
If you ever get over here as promised and we can drink together, I’ve got several bottles of '05 and '06 Botella and Southing (and Ten) in the cellar awaiting…
Todd - i am definitely getting down this summer one w/e and will make sure to give you a heads up. thinking 3rd or 4th w/e in July. i do find i like my SS with 5+ years of age, with the exception of Botella which seems to mature more readily IMO.
