TN: 2005 Saxum Syrah Booker Vineyard (USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles)

  • 2005 Saxum Syrah Booker Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (1/20/2010)
My first Booker…inky blackberry syrup in color. Wonderful floral nose of fresh crushed black/blueberries, roasted espresso bean, Kirsch liqueur, sweet hot road tar. In the mouth…classic SAXUM! Rich dark oozing berry fruit, not too sweet, complexed perfectly with dark chocolate covered blueberries/cherries, mocha, dusty oak barrel, cherry pixy/white pepper spice. Has a wonderful feel to it…big, yet fresh and well layered…loaded with lots of tasty goodies! Another super Saxum! Can’t wait to try the '07! (96 pts.)

way to go, Buzz! I had the 05 James Berry at Artisan on Saturday… no notes since it might have been #58 or #72 that i tried that long day in Paso… i also went by the Booker tasting room Friday, only to find out they were closed (out of wine). headbang

I saw your note on the 2002 Reva…Bday weekend? Happy Bday! Looks like you celebrated in style! You and I just need to sit down together and start poppin Saxum’s and Alban’s [drinkers.gif] …great wines! Did you get the “second offer” from Saxum? I wasn’t going to buy any…but just had to, since Justin was so kind.

Very intrigued on that 2006 L’Oustal Blanc?? Tell me more…

soon, my friend… life is just about back to “normal” now that the Hollidays (including my Birthday) have passed and the year end/begining minutia is done blahblah

the '06 L’Oustal had the most unusual nose i’ve encountered in a long time… only got a half glass as I shared it with those that treated us so well at Linne… i will say that i am very encouraged with the 08 samples i was able to try in Paso, the reds are very plush/hedonistic, and may not have the structure to age like the 07’s, but will be very enjoyable over the short/medium term.

you’d be very proud of me: i took notes at Barrel 27, Hug, Anglim, Linne (in the tasting room)… but when i got to barrel tasting on Sat, couldn’t write much of interest: Villa Creek (was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and generosity of Cris), Denner (Anthony is taking over and i saw a tower pallet of Saxum: no pic taken), and Linne… then dinner at Artisan with the 05 Saxum James Berry and 03 LC Nemesis… which doesn’t even include the Wind Gap James Berry and Griffin(which kicked @ss!) that I opened at VC, decanted and brought with us to share. Life is good [whistle.gif]

Thanks for the note Buzz and I couldn’t agree more. For me, this was the absolute best Saxum I’ve ever had and one of my favorite wines ever. No other Saxum (for me, at least) has even come close.
