2005 Saxum Broken Stones - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (10/16/2009)
Opaque purple. Really opaque. Light disappeared into it. Like a black hole. Except purple. A purple hole.
Dark fruits with some heat on the nose. This had another olfactory element that is hard to describe. The best way I can say it is that it smelled “purple.” Certainly not an aromatic wine, but pleasant (except for the heat aspect).
Large dark dark dark (did I say dark?) fruits, some mocha/chocolate, with a tannic finish. No heat on the palate. Some minerals.
A tasty wine.

Any thoughts as to the longevity of this?
Well, it was a big honkin’ wine with some structure to support the fruit. However, I have little experience with Cali-rhone type wines, and whether they age. I generally don’t think that California wines age as well as French or Italian wines. However, this thing had a lot of stuffing so I can’t believe it’s going to go bad any time soon.
Maybe just my palate, but I drink 'em (i.e. Saxum wines) young. For me, what you gain in complexity doesn’t match the loss of youthful exuberance for these wines. I’ll be starting '06s soon.
I love saxum young, but a vertical of Bone Rock last winter showed all of them are ageing just fine. The 2000, admittedly less exuberant on release, was one of the WOTN’s IIRC. I think they will age just fine if I can keep from popping the corks.
