another great 2005 QPR

Scott

Scott,

When I opened this thread, I wondered if it would be the positive or negative side of what appears to be a polarizing wine. I still really want to try it, but I’ve seen some rather low-ranking reviews on it, and then many like yours and those from Francois’ tasting group, where it won a rather impressive taste-off.

The wine certainly has intrigued me, so I must be sure to look for it if I ever step foot in a wine store again.

T - Let me know when you want to crack one. I have a few.

I bought a case of this that I have been sitting on. I had n’t planned on opening one for two more years or so.

I often wonder if people get the Reignac and the Chateau de Reignac bottlings confused with each other.

i looked back at CT and the notes there are pretty consistent
i dont know if there is bottle variation
i do know that the bottle i drank was great at the price point and i can see it doing very well at a blind tasting

Scott,

I’m happy to see this note, thanks for posting. I just had a bottle on Thursday and was a little bit thrown off. As you mentioned, the wine in my bottle was very deep and extracted, very full bodied but had a steely character that was inconsistent with previous experiences. Clearly not TCA or Brett-affected, but not quite up to speed. I wondered if it was just a bit closed at age 4 (really 3) and it certainly didn’t open up over an hour or two.

Apparently your example was pleasant… I’ll grab another bottle and see if it is consistent, or if I am consistent! I agree, no one would confuse this with a California wine; clear sense of place each time tasted or consumed.

Cheers,

Private : Daniel : your email seems out ?

About Reignac :

Since our recorded session with reignac and the big guns was highly discussed all around, with some comments about the fact that we may have put ina micro-waves the Petrus in order to downgrade it (unbelievable the ideas some people have !), I decide to do it a gain, but with the vintage 98 and adding some others wines such as pape-Clément, Pavie, LLC, La Conseillante, Palmer etc ; up to 22/24 wines.
Of course, blind and recorded. At least, with some “small” other wines such as Haut-Condissas, La Fleur Cardinale, Rollan de By, it will be a more “open” tasting. And most of the 98 are open if not at their summit. Nothing will come from properties : all the wines will be bought around.
And I think it is time to stop the so easy but so reductive system over 100 points (in fact 80 to 100). I will use a new system (sorry, no time tonite to translate, but easy to understand). 7 categories :

A REFERENCE R Référence Un vin quasi-parfait, qui procure une réelle émotion, offre une longueur d’anthologie et dénote un potentiel évident. Ses équilibres sont impeccables.

EXCELLENT E Excellent Qualités immédiates, grands équilibres, longueur remarquable, classe naturelle. Au-dessus du lot avec un potentiel sensible et une marque de beau terroir.

VERY GOOD TB Très bon Pas de défauts.

We will see out it works, but at least, I think it give more suitable information for the amateur. And it is certainly more comprehensive for the producer.

Francois - I think this is a wonderful idea. It won’t work in the professional world, as ‘Excellent’ doesn’t change the price of a wine, but ‘100 points’ does!

Now, I wonder if Eric LeVine would be willing to add a dropdown menu for such a selection in CellarTracker, where he can, from a grassroots campaign, start a new movement AWAY from a point system??

Eric, what say you?

Francois, how do you determine the ringers to include in your tastings with the big guns? It seems I’m always hearing about Reignac and Haut-Condissas in GJE tastings - how did you decide on those wines in particular as the lucky contenders?

Keith :

I am really open to include different ringers. If you understand french, just have a look at my last post on my blog where I quote what we will taste at the “new” sessions scheduled for december 2d, where Kevin will come and I hope Wilfred and Kelly.

Usuamly, to choose a ringer, I discuss with the GJE Members who inform me about some “unknown” wines. For example, it is quite clear that in some years to come, we will include the new property in Médoc from Bernard Magrez, “Tour Blanche” which did reach a very high rank at our last Bordeaux session at Malartic Lagravière.

In fact, any producer may ask me to include his wine. Usually, the process is : I taste it with some GJE, we decide if it may be included, and we do. Of course, I take many times (and will) some crus like Haut-Condissas and Rollan de By or Reignac or d’Aiguihle. Why so often ? Just to check if it was not an accident when they did reach in the past some high ranking.

And, of course, you know we are a very small group with only 6 to 10 tastings per year : so we are far away from what may be done by a magazine or a guru for which, tastings is inside an economic system (i.e. to make $$$). I depends heavily on wealthy sponsors, outside the wine world.

PM : Daniel : OK, I got now your right email.
