2005 Pieve Santa Restituta (Gaja) Brunello di Montalcino - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino (5/23/2014)
A very solid showing tonight. Even after a lengthy decant, this still needed some time to open up and show all that it had. Really captures the spirit and essence of the grape and place, with plenty of earth and fruit-driven nuances that are constantly emerging as if it’s one-upping itself. And it succeeds. Leather, cherries, dust, scorched earth and delicately strewn brown spices. A joy to drink, and in its window. 14,5% abv is fully integrated; tannins are fine, with nimble grip. 2005 didn’t see the press/ media giving too much love to this vintage, which makes this affordable little gem shine that much brighter. recommended, drink thru 2019
Aerated to decanter for 3 hours, served non-blind.
