TN: 2005 Nigl Riesling Kremsleiten

The recent thread on Alzinger prompted me to break out a bottle of one of my favorite non-Wachau producers.

Color is a light yellow in the glass, with an entrancing nose of petrol-laced fruit cocktail & slate - to be honest, after a nose with this amount of complexity, the palate is guaranteed to disappoint.

Sweet & sour pineapple, bracing acidity and a perky finish - very nice all in, but clearly a second-class citizen to that wonderful nose. I’ve been drinking through a case of this over the past few years, and this may be the best showing yet. 13.5% alcohol per the label.

I’ve done the same w/a case of the Nigl Privat 05, a wine that makes me shake my head in wonderment. Glad to have some magnums of it, too–in a Bordeaux-shaped bottle rather than the typical Austrian wine bottle. That and Hirtzberger’s Singerriedel 05 are my favorites of that vintage, though I have too few data points.
