TN: 2005 Moulin Haut Laroque, Canon-Fronsac (2x4)

Another wine in a great vintage ruined by the prevalence of wood and Rolland.

I really don’t know much about this estate and readily admit to buying some based on price and Parker write-up back in 2007. This is my first check-in.

Pretty modern feel to it, roasted coffee, toast, smoke and dark licorice on the nose. Heavy palate presence, dark fruits and massive presence of wood. I would say omnipresence of wood, nearly masking anything worthwhile in this wine. The worst part is, the wood is dry, astringent, new, making the wine feel dried and tired. I cannot see this turning into anything pleasant. The fruit will never outlast the wood.

I hate this wine.

Thanks for the post. I bought a case. Opened one a year or so after arrival and I couldn’t finish it. It was so aggressively tannic. I was thinking I should wait 10 - 15 Yeats to try it again.
I’m not buying wine like this anymore. I will probably be alive in another 10 - 15 years but the odds go down every year. A 4-5 year cellaring time is what I strive for now

Trying some more tonight, Jim, after keeping it in the fridge over night. Integrating a little more, but I just cannot get past the heavy dosage of oak treatment. It’s not the tannins, its the astringency and dryness from so much wood.
