TN: 2005 Match Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Butterdragon Hill

  • 2005 Match Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Butterdragon Hill - USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena (3/21/2016)
Drinking beautifully tonight. 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Merlot, but there’s a savory green herbal note that is more reminiscent of Cab Franc. Tobacco and some faint cassis notes. Soft and delicious, this has aged beautifully. Tannins are barely perceptible with a beautiful tapered finish. Very good. (92 pts.)

I’m not a big Cab drinker, but this was really lovely. It’s really a shame that Match is no longer; Randy made some beautiful wines that offered a very good QPR. This was very secondary and while it should last for a few more years, I think it’s in a great spot now.

The 2007 if fantastic too. Judging by your note, it’s a little bolder and less herbal, but drinking well now.

Match’s demise was a very sad thing. We really enjoyed visiting wiith Randy and tasting through his wines in a very relaxed setting.
We miss those days. Fortunately, we have several dozen bottles left.

I didn’t know Randy, but I agree that it was sad. Most wineries that I buy from are, essentially, small businesses that are primarily run by an owner-operator. I enjoy throwing my support behind these sorts of operations, which extends well beyond the world of wine. I hope that Randy is onto bigger and better things.

Ditto. I’m going to try to contact him to see what he’s up to these days.

He’s still selling the last of his inventory at 1/3 off retail.

+1. Randy is active on Twitter posting lots of photography. I am down under 2 dozen bottles. Probably should buy more while it is still available.
