TN: 2005 Mark Angeli Anjou Rosé d'un Jour

I’ve had this one a few more occasions, but leaves me cold each time. It’s unique and interesting (made from the Grolleau grape), but ultimately I find that it simply isn’t pleasant to taste or experience.

Strawberries on the nose and palate, along with some licorice, subtle peppery notes, and wild forest. Viscous and sweet, but then from the mid-palate through finish it seems like there’s this vaguely perceptible dryness that’s trying to show through (I struggle to explain this, it’s like a vinuous expression of cognitive dissonance… is it a dry wine that wants to be sweet or a sweet wine seeking a dry expression!?). And the finish has a bitterness that I find unpleasant. Ultimately, for me, this wine lacks harmony (the tension between sweet and dry, as well as the bitterness of the flavors and juxtaposition between delicate strawberry and pepper notes clash rather than harmonize).

I have friends that love this wine, but I just… don’t… get… it (say it like Shatner).
