TN: 2005 Lynmar Pinot Noir Russian River Valley

  • 2005 Lynmar Pinot Noir Russian River Valley - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (1/10/2010)
Traci had a bottle of this open while she was cooking dinner so I helped myself to a glass. Pleasant Pinot Noir. Nose shows some spice and the tell tell crancherry fruit.

On the palate, this is a little lighter than I expected and a little “juicier” than most of the Lynmar Pinots that I have had. The juiciness is kind of refreshing and the wine shows more cranberry and sour cherry with a little spicy oak and forest floor. Overall the wine definitely fits in the “very good” category, I just expected a little bit more complexity and density in the wine. (88 pts.)

my 1st real, elongated tasting @ Lymnar was with my buddy Gordon and my very first impression given to him and Lynn was that there was waayyy too much space, quality-wise, between their entry-level wines and their serious SV Pinots. in 2007 that gap has lessened but i agree with you about the older, baseline wines of Lynmar.

Glenn - you and I must drink more Lynmar than anyone on this board!!!

I agree with you regarding the quality of the “basic” bottlings versus the SVD bottlings for Pinot. I haven’t seen that big of a gap between the basic Chardonnay bottling and the SVD bottlings though.

i don’t know about the Chard, it may just be the quality spectrum there requires more focus to appreciate. no doubt La Sereinité stands apart, though not far from Quail Hill. Wente is a whole different approach and it shows. the RRV Chard is IMO simpler with less depth but more enjoyable than the RRV PN.

Agreed

Tony- Have you tried the Thumbprint Chardonnay from RRV? I saw it on WTSO for $12 and as it isn’t a huge risk, I thought I might give it a try.

Kimberly - I have not, but for $12 sounds like something to definitely try. In fact, I don’t think I have had any of the Thumbprint wines…even when i lived up in Santa Rosa.

I went for it and will report back. Thanks for your response.

I am on the same page as you, Tony and Glenn. I pass on the entry pinot but absolutely LOVE the Five Sisters and buy it every year.

every year they make one! don’t miss their 07 Bliss Block Sherri - one of the best 2007 Pinots i have tasted. Terra de Promissio also really rocks on the darker side of PN.

Thanks, Glenn. I will definitely buy that one.
