TN: 2005 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Cuvée de Trois

  • 2005 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Cuvée de Trois - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (11/25/2009)
It’s been over a year since my last bottle and I’ve seen a lot of improvement in this wine - the last two bottles of it I had were a little excessive in acidity, and a little out of balance IMO-- but this bottle has toned down quite a bit, and the aromatics of the wine (in terms of sheer “volume”) was one of the most explosive I had this year. Aromas of bright red fruits (cranberry, cherry, pomegranate), orange zest, and a hint of baking spices just expand out the glass and fill the room. On the palate, still a very high-toned wine with fresh acidity more in check. Definitely could use a little decanting, but enjoyable over two nights. This wine is headed in the right direction and another year of slumber should really hit the sweet spot for it. (90 pts.)

Nice note, James. Yeah, this 2005 really is going to need time. It’s the basic bottling from Swan, but their 2005s are so superb that they all merit age. The CD3 is no exception. At least the 2004 is really drinking beautifully …

Only 1 left :frowning:

Does this mean I should rethink my strategy for drinking the 2007’s early?

Andrew – definitely, if you can have the patience. The 2007 has at least as much structure as the 2005.
