2005 Four Vines Anarchy - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (12/8/2009)
– popped and poured –
– tasted non-blind over 3 days –
40% Syrah, 31% Mourvedre, 29% Zinfandel
NOSE: initially, stunning nose of spices, bright cherry leather, and mild oak; zin obviously taking center stage right now with its red zin fruit; a strong maple syrup note emerged about 30 minutes after opening, with the fruits darkening and moving the background; slight pine note now, as well; about 3 hours in a pepper note presents itself. The nose smells like this wine is just starting to develop some tertiary aspects.
BODY: some sediment present; purple-ruby color of medium-deep depth; medium-full bodied.
TASTE: about 40 min. after opening: smooth; juicy; strawberry jam leathers (like those fruit “leathers” you can buy at the store); in a very nice place right now; not tannic; sweet, not bitter - not over-extracted. 1:50 in: oak stepping forward; spicy; hint of chocolate; not alcholic (15.0%). 3:15 in: fruits darkening; oak; smooth; Mourved. is really hiding; length of finish is on the short side of medium (30-35 sec.); good Zinberry; Ashley calls this very “Paso-like”’ a bit hollow on the rear palate. Still strong on Day 3, although the alcohol is much more assertive now. Not quite as good as it was a couple years ago.
B: 50, 5, 13, 16, 7 = (91 pts.)
