TN: 2005 E. Guigal St. Joseph Vignes de L'Hospice

  • 2005 E. Guigal St. Joseph Vignes de L’Hospice - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph (11/12/2014)
I had this four years ago and thought that it will need another five years of cellaring. This has developed nicely. The barrel note has subsided a lot and now only a hint of cedar. Intense sweet black fruits, crushed blueberries, blueberry liquor, licorice, ink and mineral. Excellent concentration, intense blue fruit driven palate impression, nicely integrated tannins and sweet clean finish. Still quite young and will benefit from another five years of cellaring. A bit denser and riper than a typical St. Joseph. Quite enjoyable. (93 pts.)

Hint of Ash assuming coming from the barrel, very concentrated blue fruit. If you really breadth deep and stick your nose to it, you can being of St. Joseph flower and mineral. It will require at least five more years of aging to express the terroir. The wine showed alot better on the second day both texturally and fruit expression. (91 pts.)

Thanks for the note, Kevin; I had the 2004 and 2005 a few years ago and both had good potential but were still pretty young (purple); the 1999, however, a couple of years ago, was ready and was really quite good. Chave’s estate '05 is showing very nicely now, by the way.

Great to see the note on this…I’ve got a couple tucked away. Will leave them rest for a while.

Kevin, any idea on the '06? (the one I have).

Howard

I would hold for at least five more years.

The 06 and 08 St Joseph ‘Lieu Dits’ are both drinking very well. The 06 is a little more modern, the 08 is a nice perfumed mid-weight wine.

For some reason I did not buy the 2005. I only have the 2004 and the 2010. Any idea about the 2004?

Thanks Jim and Jeremy. I liked all of the '06 Guigal St Josephs on release but have not yet tried a L’Hospice or a Lieu Dit Rouge. So one may be a hold and another a drink.

I also liked the '06 Lieu Dit Blanc and have recently tried one and it is still doing well, as compared to my Guigal '06 Condrieus, that I loved on release, but is now, sadly, shot.

Sorry, I don’t think I tried the '04 L’Hospice …

I had the 06 just about 4 weeks ago and I found it primary and, like Jeremy, very modern in style with big ripeness and generous oak to the point of being intrusive.

Sanjay,

I think this vintage (04) tastes a little more “North Rhone” right now and a little less “Guigal”, which is where the 06 most likely is at the moment. i don’t have any kind of detailed note on the 04 I had last year, but it was definitely more evolved.

Thierry, you tried '06 L’Hospice or Lieu Dit?

(We were probably at the same tasting and bought together).

Vignes de l’Hospice, sorry my comment above was about a different wine than Jeremy; but the impressions were the same.

Pretty sure we were.

How about 2003 ?

Frank,
Chave is my favorite rhone producer. I have not had any completely shutdown Chave reds.

Howard,
Unfortunately no notes on 06.

Jeremy,
Although I have not had the 08, I can relate to this. Love the nose on smaller vintage rhone reds.

Sanjay,
I agree with Jim. I only had the 04 d’Ampuis, the nose is a more “Northern Rhone” without strong Guigal signature.

Edward,
Once again based on the 04 d’Ampuis and La Las, they are flamboyant wines, very 03 and YMMV significantly.
