TN: 2005 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese (Germany, Nahe)

2005 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Nahe (6/26/2014)
Complex, elegant, and pure are the best descriptors for this wine. One word that does not really fit is Spätlese. The 2005 Brücke drinks as a fine Auslese. The aromas and flavors run to the tropical, with the acidity sufficient for balance, with none to spare for those who like something more electric. This is what the 2005 vintage gives us for now, purity, richness and elegance. There certainly is no lack of material here, so there is no reason to worry about additional cellar time. No issue with drinking it now though.

Thanks for the note. Sounds delicious.

Sounds great. Would you think of it more as a dessert wine?

No. It’s not so rich to be a dessert wine. It really does show as classical Auslese. Think aperitif or served alongside something with gentle spice. Don’t overdo it. This wine is very much about delicacy.

Thanks, I need to have a few btls like this. Wouldn’t be a frequent wine in my house but fun occasionally. Right now, I’m probably more in the Donnhoff QBA camp most of the time.

Opened one of these for Christmas with the family last year and it was very well received. Agree entirely about the acid comment, for me a little more would take this to another level but I loved it anyway.

David,

Thanks for the note. Haven’t had the '05, but recently had the '11 and had the same conclusion. Wonderful wine, but would have guessed Auslese rather than Spätlese.

Cheers! [cheers.gif]

2011 has a similar acid balance to 2005. A touch soft for my preference, but both lovely wines.

Had a 2005 donnhoff hermannshohle spatlese a couple of weeks ago. Sensatiional wine, a real show stopper.
