  • 2005 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de mon Aïeul - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (1/2/2010)
    Slow O’d for around 10 hrs. Impressively layered and complex on the nose, sporting a depth of sugar plums and perfume I haven’t often experienced in CdP. Structure, structure structure, this wine has it to the gills, taking the essence of old vine grenache, sweet kirsch fruit / dark cherry, smoke, asphalt a touch of garrigue and then builds an impenetrable brick fortress around it. Little or zero influence of any barrique, large or small, and a long, loaded finish. Several inexperienced tasters raved about this, which was very satisfying seeing firsthand that a top shelf wine doesn’t have to wow a non wine geek with extroverted fruit or undue oak influence. Regarding recent vintages, I am a very firm believer that this will out dual the 03, 04 the 06 and even the prefect RMP 2007 vintage in a decade. It really has that much potential. (96 pts.)

Good to read this is actually drinking so very well now. I’ve not touched mine as 2005 is a vintage for the very, very long haul… so don’t rush to drink them all now.

Is there anyone who has recently compared the '05 and '06 vintages?

I had a bottle of the 2006 Clos des Papes about a week ago and I was impressed.
