TN: 2005 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay Vendanges Sélectionnées

  • 2005 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay Vendanges Sélectionnées - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay (10/5/2013)
Well there goes my theory that almost no 2005 is ready to drink. This was an absolute beauty and with a few minutes of air was rip roaring ready to go. This feminine Volnay had a pretty nose with light and pleasant cheery cherry fruit, with some more pleasant soil and mineral tones, and more red fruit perceptions. In the mouth the wine was even better. There was a perception of sour ripe red cherry and other red fruits. The perception was like cream cheese or creme fraiche. Not in the cheesy or dairy sense, but in that tart, textural, mouth pleasing sense. I just want to reiterate the mouth pleasing, textural sour, ripe cherry/red fruit on the delicious swallow. I can’t imagine how good some of the big boys from this stable are-or will be! (94 pts.)

so…nothing lactic? A little confusing since you use “cream cheese” and “creme fraiche” as analogies…it sounds like you’re talking about lactic acidity? But…I’m not sure, as usually a lactic character is not a plus, and you seemed to have really liked what you tasted.

Definitely not lactic. It was hard to describe. Im trying to describe the sweet/tart red fruit perceptions while adding texture. I took away dairy or cheese from my description but maybe it still led you there.
