TN: 2005 Domaine des Escaravailles Côtes du Rhône Villages Rasteau La Ponce

  • 2005 Domaine des Escaravailles Côtes du Rhône Villages Rasteau La Ponce - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages Rasteau (8/29/2009)
A massive nose of dark fruits reminds me of some Napa cab’s. The floral components of the aromatics redirect one back to the Rhone. The palate is a massive blast of blackberry compote with a rustic, grainy mouthfeel. Plenty of tannins and plenty of fruit will keep this going for many years to come. A bit fruit forward and slightly alcoholic for my taste but a great value for $14. (90 pts.)

I had the 2005 Escaravailles Heritage 1924 in late Octobrer 2008. My notes on the wine are here in case you’re interested. I’d like to try this La Ponce bottling to compare.

My guess is they’re pretty similar based on your note. Your “modern” question/comment certainly strikes a chord. This was VERY fruit forward.

I have a few more & would be more than happy to send you a bottle but the philippines is a long way away.

Thanks for the note and I’m a big fan of this producer. Very fruit forward but they do have structure as well.

I agree about the structure. I’ve had these sitting around for awhile and was getting worried they might die of neglect. No danger there at all. I wouldn’t be surprised if they last another 20 years, In fact I’d bet on it.

The 2001 La Ponce is still going strong. The '07s that I’ve had from this producer will benefit from a couple of years in the bottle.
