2005 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Les Grézeaux - France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon (11/2/2025)
If you are interested in drinking a wine at it's perfect arc, look no further than the 2005 Baudry Grézeaux. Assuming this was a representative bottle, the wine is in a perfect place. My wine group assembled for a Cab Franc themed evening (also had a sauv blanc/semillon theme going). I believe most people were impressed by this showing, so it's not just me waxing unpoetically. Aromatically, it's very open with loads of red fruits, slight funk. herbs, tobacco and spice which continues to the palate. The hallmark bell pepper notes are very mild, if even detectable. Grézeaux's rustic appeal perseveres here, something I really love about Grézeaux. Incredible silky and lacy with a very Burgundian texture. There is some structure left, with the tannins softening considerably. Acidity is also present. I've been following Grézeaux since the 2002 vintage and love how this wine matures. When I say this wine is one of the greatest deals in wine, tonight's showing reenforces that idea. The wine was $16.99 on release. It was my wine of the night and bettered both the ’01 & ’02 Dalle Valle Maya and '06 L'Eglise-Clinet.
Thanks for the tasting note. I think I’ve got a bottle of that wine buried in a locker somewhere!
2005 Baudry major reds are in a great drinking zone these days.
The La Croix Boissee that we had in December last year was in excellent form.
Thanks for the great note. Haven’t had '05 Les Grezeaux in awhile, but post '05, vintages to look out for are 2010 and 2014 in my opinion.
Yes and yes!!!
One of the few wines I regularly buy solid cases of for the cellar so always nice to see a note like this. Not $16.99 anymore but still an amazing value.
Dan-Go find that bottle!
Always love this wine. This sounds terrific - I don’t have any '05 Grézeaux, but this has me thinking about checking into one of my '05 Clos Guillots.
(Though I do have a magnum of the '96 Grézeaux on deck for later this fall/winter, and your note has me excited to open it soon.)
From sept 2022…
From magnum. Opened an hour before serving but not decanted. This was just fabulous. Inky black colour. Lots of dark fruit on the nose and palate. Some hints of bell pepper in a long, precise finish. Some pretty experienced tasters were stunned by this with plenty of comments along the lines of: “I had no idea that the Loire could produce wines like this!”.
