2005 Chateau Pichon-Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville, Pauillac, France
Popped and poured to go with some dry rub baby back ribs. There is so much potential here and while delicious, I was just a touch remorseful afterwards because this is one less bottle of a potentially great wine in 5-10-15 years or so. The nose was primarily of cassis and blackberries with just the faintest hint of meat aromas and spice. On the palate the tannins were incredibly sweet and smooth with black fruits and a very tiny bit of oak at the end. Not as big and forward as the 2003 or 2000s and definitely no where near as expressive as the 2004s that I’ve been drinking. But to me, this wine seemed to have more structure and better balance than any of them. Even better on day 2 for breakfast. Hopefully I have the resolve not to touch these for a while.
