TN: 2005 Château Mas Neuf Costières-de-Nîmes Compostelle

  • 2005 Château Mas Neuf Costières-de-Nîmes Compostelle - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Costières-de-Nîmes (1/20/2010)
Garagiste purchase. A lovely dose of anise on the nose with some perfume, herbs, and red cherry. That is, unfortunately, the best part of this wine, but at least it is quite nice. The palate has dusty and tart red fruits, but also a bitterness or greenness that I’m not fond of, and the sour red fruits carry on to the finish. The tannins are very small, and chalk-like, acidity is pretty good - I imagine this being a good food wine, but it did not pair well with dinner tonight. (89 pts.)

I drank through half a case of the 2001 and thought it was really nice, also with food. But I kept on last bottle that I drank a few years after the others and it struck me as being a real fruit bomb–my tastes had just changed so much in the meanwhile!

I wonder if I should let my last bottle sit a while, see how it turns out…
