TN: 2005 C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) Rioja Viña Real Crianza

  • 2005 C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) Rioja Viña Real Crianza - Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja (6/30/2009)
This wine is spot on for what it is - rather more traditional Rioja. Baked fruits, roasted earth, roasted herbs, dust, cocoa powder and a fair shake of soft, sweet oak (not to the point of coconut or dill, but sweet American oak) that is gradually turning to cedar. The oak is not at all in the way on the palate and there only a touch of tannin suggesting this should drink well for the next 5 years or so. No mind blowing complexity, but, much like a good Cotes du Rhone, Chianti or Montepulciano, it is a great reminder that you can have a really honest bottle of wine and a lot of enjoyment without shelling out for Burgundy and Barolo all the time!

One of my favorite producers in Rioja. Always reliable and stylistically right in my wheel house. You should try some of the gran reservas and reservas from the 90s. I think PJ’s has quite a few to choose from IIRC. As usual, no affiliation with PJ’s, yadda yadda beyong being a satisfied customer.

Steffen – I’ve had many of their older wines, and I still have some 76’s and a few more recent wines in the cellar

The 2001 Imperial Reserva from the same winery is drinking beautifully.

I had the good fortune last September to be invited to a tasting of quite a few of their wines as presented by Jose Luis Ripa, their exporting director. Wonderful, across the board, from white, rose to much older vintages of their Rioja.
