2005 Buccella Merlot- USA, California, Napa Valley (12/26/2009)
Fantastic. so lush, plush, creamy and rich. swirling layers of fruit - blackberries, boysenberries accompanied by a shot of espresso and tiny grains of chocolate. Concentrated yet not over the top and surprisingly in balance.
Decadent, Delicious, and Prodigious. (94 pts.)
Scott,
I just finished telling a customer the same thing, it was the best domestic Merlot I’ve tasted.
A few weeks ago we had a customer ask for a recommendaton for a bottle to take to a local steakhouse. We suggested the Buccella Merlot and told him to make sure they decanted it as soon as they got there, the Somm at the restaurant poured it into the decanter and was offered a taste. He asked the customer where he got it and said we have to add this to the list.
It is definitely a Cab lovers merlot.
i agree with carrie def. a napa cab lovers wine.very well done in that style and a beautiful bottle. the finish has been a bit short from the bottles i have opened but the palate is always nice
Funny, my impressions from both my experiences with the Buccella wines have been lots of hot fruit without a lot of finesse (and I mentioned heat, right). Almost sounds like you had a different winery’s wine.
Yeah, I may have to check it out again. I would be suspicious of bad bottles but for the fact that the bottles were samples from the winery (once at a trade tasting once from a bottle poured by a roving rep). Looks like I’ll have to track down another (perhaps older?) bottle to taste.
