TN: 2005 Bouchard Teurons

TN: 2005 Bouchard Teurons 1er. $33. 86 points on night one, then surprisingly downhill. Drinkable but wood-bound on day one, but later a dreadful oaky mess. Consumed over three nights (refrigerated between tastings). I know this has many years to go, and its really too young and may shed some wood, but I have finally decided Bouchard is simply off my buy list after similar experiences. It’s a house style that I actively dislike.

What is surprising to me is the Burghound gave this a 91, suggesting “a deft touch of wood lurking in the background.” Instructive, as Schildkinect (for Parker) gave it 88. They both were generous.

Bouchard got better. I really liked their '08s, '09s, and '10s after finding the '05s terribly woody.

Interestingly, I had this wine this past week. It was just an absolutely beautiful wine. Lots of rich fruit. Oak has integrated into the wine. Still not mature as it does not really have mature flavors yet. But, it is wine open and the fruit is just intoxicatingly fabulous as is the nose.

If Burghound gave this wine 91 points, he underrated it. Most likely, this wine was a mess in 2016 (as were so many 2005s around that time), but all it needed was time. Gives me hope that 2005s may be coming around.
