TN: 2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot

  • 2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru (10/30/2014)
PnP, lovely medium crimson color and perfuse floral nose. Yea! I grabbed this without knowing how many more of these I had and was delighted to see I have 3 more. So, this was #1 of 4. I had planned to wait till next year to drink my first on it’s 10th bday but no regrets tonight. This has it all; sparkling fresh vibrant '05 fruit, finesse, balance, minerality, aromatics and depth. Going to be tough to keep my hands off these going forward but, I’m sure it has even better days ahead. This is a great spokesman for the highly taughted '05 vintage. I rarely see my wife drain her first glass before I. Served with Nita’s cassoulet. I’ll do my best to wait a few before trying my next but really fun now. The combination of intensity and elegance here makes this a real head turner and one of the most promising btls in my cellar. This ought be designated Grand Cru. (93 pts.)

I snagged a bunch of the 1990 Carnot recently from an auction site and sampled the first with a bit of trepidation. You never know. But, bam! this opened up quickly with dark sweet fruit in top, earthy tangy ride down the middle, and a shroomy face of more red fruit on the nose. Soft and gentle from age, but not at all wimpy. So - apparently lovely at 9 years old but going strong at 25. At least from a strong vintage.

Thanks for the note. I have cases of bottles and mags of this but was assuming it would need another 5 years at least. Noted that meadows also said drink from 2013 so sounds like it’s time to try one out.

Great to read this, thanks.
I bought more of this than anything in '05 in part due to BH’s glowing review and the value it was here on release. Haven’t opened one yet and will hold for a while yet.

I only have 3 and hopefully I can keep my hands off for a few more years. Thanks for the note Craig!!

If you have 3 or less I’d wait another couple years till 2016 to try your first just to spread out your drinking pattern and to give it a full 10yrs in btl. If, you have 4 or more like I did I’d say try one anytime you like. It’s not fully realized by any measure but it surely is interesting and delicious now and you won’t get slapped. This is the first 05, I’ve tried from my cellar since leaving them alone shortly after release. I won’t be opening my Roumier BMs till they hit at least 15 since I only have a couple.

You’re looking very smart now. I’m always reluctant to go long on anything but wish I had gotten six of these originally. I checked and its $100+ now with minimal availability.

I had the 05 last year and it was really nice. a 2010 recently looked excellent too. VFM from Bouchard portfolio.
