TN: 2005 Bitouzet-Prieur Volnay 1er Cru Pitures

  • 2005 Bitouzet-Prieur Volnay 1er Cru Pitures - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru (9/3/2012)
This was my very first bottle of this that I have liked. It still shows very tannic, but the fruit seemed to have caught up with the structure this time. It is a wine in a very “vinous” style. Dry and somewhat straightforward, this one still lacks ever so slightly in the complexity department. Red berries, sour cherry, raspberry and red currant flavors are probably the best descriptors of this wine…along with a little earth. It went great with a roast chicken, but I think this wine can present some issues in terms of food pairing, especially when the food gets progressively bolder seasoned. I liked it, but I certainly didn’t love it.

Maybe it needs another ten years?

That may very well be true. But I am a little concerned that the fruit won’t last that long.

I can bore for England on the subject, but maturity in Burgundy is in my experience nothing whatever to do with a race between fruit and tannin. Fruit doesn’t disappear but can go into hiding for a wine’s closed period, which may be very long in the case of 05.

2005 fruit should last pretty much forever. I dont think this is a worry.

I generally agree, bu this win seems just a touch thin. Have either of you had this wine or another wine of this producer’s 2005 lineup?

I’ve had both the Taillepieds and Chenes and they were both beautiful when young. I’ve not had one in a couple years now.

I had their 05 Volnay village wine twice a few years ago. it seemed to have the stuffing to age.

Sorry if I was a bit terse above.

Had the 1985 a couple of years back, and it was absolutely beautiful. I suspect the 2005 needs a lot of time yet!

That is somewhat promising to hear as I have several of the’02’s which too showed very lean…
