TN: 2005 Albert Mann Pinot Gris Hengst (France, Alsace, Wintzenheim, Alsace Grand Cru AOC)

  • 2005 Albert Mann Pinot Gris Hengst - France, Alsace, Wintzenheim, Alsace Grand Cru AOC (3/6/2012)
Smoky apple and pear, with a touch of orange rind in the background. Viscous and dense, but with enough acidity to keep it from being clumsy. Pear compote and more smoke on the round palate, with a hint of honey on the back end. There is a sense of stoniness, but it it lost a bit in the roundness of the wine. Quite long and brooding, and relatively layered and complicated. A great wine to have a glass or two, but maybe not a bottle. Outstanding, but a little goes a long way. 90 pts (90 pts.)

Nice note Todd, pretty much sums up why I don’t buy much Pinot Gris, a glass or two suffice, irrespective of how good those are… Cheers Mike

Mike, I tend of agree, with the exception of SGN or occasional VT where I think the variety’s heft seems to tolerate and play well with the RS, not sure why it would do that, as intuitively it would seem to be the opposite, but I have had some wonderful PG SGN and VT’s from Weinbach and ZH, that somehow keep acidity and freshness. That said, give me Riesling or Gewurz most any day over PG.

Cheers
