2004 Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Grown Oakville - USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville (9/11/2009)
Not the best showing of this wine. Opens with dusty aromas of blueberries, ripe plums, cocoa powder, and a touch of vanilla bean and mint. Disjointed on the palate with simple black cherry fruit and some heat on the finish. Based upon previous experiences with this wine, all extremely positive, I suspect that it is just going through an awkward phase. But even though it was quite serviceable as a wine, I have to say that this bottle was a bit disappointing. (85 pts.)
Paul, only recently I had a 1994 Turnbull from magnum purchased on WC for a song, and the wine was awsome. Beautifully aged wine, so keep up your hopes.
That is disappointing. I still have several of these. I have let most of them sit because the ones I had earlier were good, but a little rough on the finish. I figured some time would soften that finish. I have never had a Turnbull that fell apart. So I have reasonable hope that your bottle was not representative.
Indeed, I have no doubts that this bottle was an anomaly, since all previous bottles of this vintage have been outstanding. It’s probably just going through a transitional stage right now.
