TN: 2004 Trio Infernal Priorat No. 1/3 (Spain, Catalunya, Priorat)

Again this pushes the ripeness to a “very ripe” state for my tastes, but avoids being pruney/raisined, hot, or port-like, so I find no fault in the ripeness. Along with the concentrated ripe fruit qualities I get tons of schistous minerality, dust and rainwater character, a bit of sweet baking spice and a bit of roasted herbs. Really pretty, complex and complete on the nose. The palate is big, balanced, and tannic. Long and chalky/rocky finish. This is not terribly evolved in comparison to my first bottle 2 years ago, so I plan on holding off 2+ years before checking in again.

I’ve winnowed down to 6 producers that I really enjoy and respect in Priorat - Mogador, Martinet, Doix, Rotllan Torra, Trio Infernal and Galena… I’ve lost my faith in Clos Erasmus as the wines only get riper and riper and are no longer to my tastes. I find the Palacios wines overextracted and underaromatic… very “made” and not very “pure.” Some other producers I have not been able to get into due to too much ripeness and/or oak, notably Vall Llach and Mas Romani… and some other producers have just failed to excite.
