2004 Saxum James Berry Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (4/11/2011)
A lot of discussion about the issues with the 04 Saxums. I admire Justin’s willingness to admit that this wine was a learning experience that led to some problem bottles. In my experience with the 04’s most have been great, a few have had problems and only one was a real issue ( Magnum of the 04 Hearstone about a year ago). In fact, a friends JBV about a month ago, was off, but still so good, I scored it 90 points. I still have a bunch of various 04’s, so I decided to open this and watch the conclusion of the Masters.
Inky purple in color. The nose is great (whew). No off aromas or brett. Lots of leather, black raspberries, bacon fat and white pepper. On the palate, no fizz at all. This is complex and has lost its baby fat and is just starting to show some interesting complexities. Light on its feet, but layered. Great balance. And delicious. I drank a few glasses down very quickly and had to put the bottle away to save some for my wife. This may have been the best showing yet for this wine. (94 pts.)
