TN: 2004 Rhys Pinot Noir Family Farm

Several CT notes indicated that this showed better on day 2, so I’ve got about a glass left to check in on this evening. I’ll update if I find the wine shows any differently. At the moment though, I’m not too sure I would recommend continuing to hold this, since I would be wary of further brett bloom. However, I’ve got one bottle left and I’ll probably let it rest for several more years just to see what happens.

When first poured, the barnyard thing is pretty overwhelming. But with some air, it recedes a bit to show dark fruit and a citrusy note, like grapefruit. The palate has Grand Cru weight, smooth and mouthfilling, but complemented by some bright acidity and a fairly substantial whack of tannins. It holds on the finish for a good while, where the components start to come together. I’m sure this wine would harmonize its structural elements with its fruit and develop well over many years, if the brett issue weren’t an issue.

Thanks for the note Jamie. I think Jim Cowan posted on one of these this week but didn’t see the brett issues. The 04’s seem to be variable that way.

Had a stellar bottle from Bob Fleming’s cellar in May. No brett issues. Killer wine. Wish I was drinking it tonight instead of the plonk I got!

Chris,

If I recall correctly, Jim’s note was on the '04 Home vineyard, which has never had any brett issues to my knowledge.

My last glass, left in the bottle without a cork at cellar temp, was not showing any brett anymore. Instead it showed a profile more life a shut-down burg: some sour cherry and then closing up on the nose. The palate does not seem to have been affected much by the air. Maybe it’s showing a little less fruit than last night, but not much less. I’ll definitely hang onto my last bottle for several more years to see what happens. I think this has the structure for at least 5 more years of development before it gets to maturity. I doubt mine will make it that long, but nevertheless…

You are correct Jamie. I was reading a bit quick there.

Thanks for the update on the wines development. I have a couple bottles still and the last time I had a glass of this it was fairly marred by brett, at least on the nose. I did like the feel and overall palate of the wine though.
