TN: 2004 Quinta de Ventozelo Touriga Nacional

A Douro (Portugal) wine that I found yesterday at the local wine store near me for $15. No formal tasting note, as a bunch of old friends stopped by for some wine and conversation last night. But here are some impressions… Overall I thought it to be a nice bottle given the price. Some dark fruit, but not overripe, nicely balanced with some light tannins. A little in the body weight department, but still a satisfying bottle. If I had to score this I’d be in the 86 point range. At that price I’d buy this again for a daily house wine.

Enjoyed this at tasting about 2 years ago and agree with your impressions. FWIW their 04 Touriga Franca was a step up IMHO.

Richard,
I’ve not had prior vintages or varietals of this wine, so good to hear the Touriga Franca is a step up. The store also had the Touriga Franca, so it looks like I’ll be heading back to grab that one to try. Thanks

The one thing I love about Portuguese dry wines is the large amount of decent ones at good prices. Hard to go wrong with many of them.

One store here in Edmonton has a choice of about 4 reds from Ventozelo, have 2 sitting in the cellar and intend to buy more when finances are better!

Andy, $15 is a sweet price as release retail was $19-ish. The Touriga Franca is more Loire-ish and a food wine but a solid value. Please post your impressions.
